Julia Minamata’s artwork for The Crimson Diamond is rendered in the style of classic EGA pixel-graphic adventure games of the late 1980s. The game, as well as this suite of prints, is a love letter to Sierra On-Line and titles such as Roberta Williams’ The Colonel’s Bequest, resulting in scenes rich with nostalgia and atmosphere. Like the Sierra artists of that era, Minamata employs dithering and other techniques to draw greater depth and nuance from the original 16-color palette, while also capturing the imaginative, theatrical quality of Sierra’s compositions. Whether depicting moonlit trains, wood-panelled interiors, or enigmatic conservatories, each print reflects the game’s distinctive blend of pixel-crafted storytelling and captivating mystery.
