Feminine Gothic Narrative in Survival Horror: Artist Talk by Grace Spee
Reception and artist talk: Thursday October 29th 5-7pm
Location: 2418 W Bloomingdale Ave, Chicago, IL
This event is organized on the occasion of Spee’s The Feminine Gothic Narrative in Survival Horror solo exhibition at Gamespace.
Drawing inspiration from iconic survival horror games such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil, Spee explores how Gothic environments, female protagonists, and themes of vulnerability and fear shape the visual language of video games.
Through risograph prints, handmade artist books, and sculpture, Spee reimagines the imagery and narratives of survival horror. The exhibition features two artist books inspired by Silent Hill, a large-scale articulated paper doll, and a selection of game-inspired prints. Playable copies of Silent Hill F (2025) and Fatal Frame 2 (2003) provide context for the work, along with footage from Rule of the Rose (2006).
During the event, Spee will discuss her creative practice, research, and the influence of the feminine gothic in survival horror video games on her work.
